Two children wearing harnesses climb a grey mobile climbing wall outdoors

Climbing Wall Hire for Scout Camps

Scout and Guide camps are some of our favourite jobs, and we've been turning up to them for years. You've usually got a field to work with, a long weekend to fill, and a lot of young people who all want a go, so the kit has to keep running from the first session to the last. We bring the wall, the trained staff, the harnesses and the paperwork, set up on grass without needing mains power, and run it for as long as your programme needs.

Which wall suits a camp

Most of it comes down to how many young people you're getting through and how much room the site has. These are the three we send to camps most often, with the rough numbers behind each one.

From £699 + VAT — the one most camps start with

The 26ft mobile climbing wall

It's 26ft with four faces at different difficulties, so a first-timer and someone who's done it before can climb side by side. It runs on an auto belay, which means a climber gets a short safety brief, climbs as high as they want, then lets go and the system lowers them down on its own. Four climb at once, and you'll get somewhere around 60 an hour through it, give or take, depending on how long they spend at the top.

It needs a hard, stable bit of ground to stand on and does fine outdoors on grass. There's no mains power involved.

From £895 + VAT — for the bigger camps

Spider Mountain for the bigger camps

If you've got the space and the numbers, Spider Mountain shifts a lot more people. It's a 9m scramble-net tower with a mega drop slide on top, and it takes up to 12 at a time, which works out at around 225 an hour. The age range runs from 3 up to adult, so it covers younger sections through to leaders. It's self-contained for power and sets up in about half an hour, though it wants a fair bit of room — around 40ft by 50ft, with flat access for the trailer.

You can add a two-person auto belay climbing wall to it if you want both the scramble net and a proper climb on one footprint. Spider Mountain is from £895 + VAT, or from £1,295 + VAT with the climbing wall added.

Smaller troops and tighter budgets

For a single group, a younger section, or a camp where the budget is the main thing, the inflatable climbing wall is the cheaper option at £495 + VAT. It's 30ft by 30ft and 20ft high. The one thing to know is that it needs power, so it wants a 13 amp socket within 25 metres or a generator, which we can supply if the site hasn't got a socket near enough.

Before you book

A few things worth sorting early, because they're the questions that come up on most camps:

  • Ground and access. The walls go on grass or another hard, stable surface, and the trailer needs flat access to where it's setting up. We can't put them on bare concrete, a grass-and-hard-surface mix, or wood chip, so it's worth picking the pitch in advance.
  • Power. The 26ft wall and Spider Mountain are self-contained, so a field with no mains is fine. Only the inflatable needs a socket or a generator.
  • Insurance and risk assessments. Every hire carries £5 million public liability insurance, and we provide risk assessments and method statements, which is useful if your group or the landowner wants them on file before the event. We can send proof of cover too. There's more on our safety and compliance page.
  • Staff. Trained staff come with the staffed walls and run the whole session, from delivery and setup through the safety briefing and supervising the climbing to collection at the end. Your leaders don't have to belay or watch the wall.
  • Multiple days and long sessions. We do a fair bit of multi-day scout work, so there's a discount for multiple days' hire, and we can extend the daily operating hours to fit round the rest of your programme rather than packing up at a fixed time.

Scout Camp FAQs

Can you stay for a whole weekend or several days?

Yes. We do a fair bit of multi-day scout work and offer a discount for multiple days' hire, and we can extend the daily operating hours to fit round your programme instead of stopping at a set time.

Do you need mains power on a campsite?

Not for the 26ft mobile climbing wall or Spider Mountain, as both are self-contained, so a field with no power is fine. Only the inflatable climbing wall needs a 13 amp socket within 25 metres or a generator, which we can bring.

What ages can take part?

The mobile climbing wall suits children and adults, with the on-site attendant managing any height or weight limits. Spider Mountain runs from age 3 up to adult, so it covers younger sections through to leaders.

Will you sort the insurance and risk assessments?

Yes. Every hire carries £5 million public liability insurance, and we provide risk assessments and method statements, plus proof of cover if your group or the landowner needs it on file.

How much ground do you need?

The walls go on grass or another hard, stable surface with flat trailer access. Spider Mountain wants about 40ft by 50ft. We can't set up on bare concrete, a grass-and-hard-surface mix, or wood chip.
